Fun in the snow

Since it doesn't seem to stop snowing, we decided to take advantage of a beautiful day and enjoy all the white stuff around here. We did a little sledding/tubing on a big hill down the street. My mom's neighbor Ken has this tube run totally groomed. He has built banks and a nice little jump. Everybody got a little snowy and wet, but we had a ton of fun! Lucas had a blast sledding, playing around and eating snow.

Way to go, Giants! We really didn't care who won the Superbowl, but we found ourselves rooting for the underdogs. What a great game! That was the most exciting game since the Broncos beat the Packers in the last few minutes in Superbowl XXXII in 1998. We were pretty disappointed in the commercials, so we were really glad it was a good game.

Our day started early - up at 5am, breakfast at 6am, then over to the Two Rivers Convention Center to set up our booth for the 2008 Magic 93.1 Wedding Expo. We loved the way our booth turned out, and we got a lot of nice feedback. We met some great brides (and a few grooms!), and we are excited for some great weddings this year. And for you brides from the show, we are extending our 10% discount until February 15th, so hurry to save some big bucks!

We are gearing up for the Magic 93.1 Wedding Expo next weekend in Grand Junction. We did this one last year, and it is a really nice show. They estimate that about 1500 people attend! We are excited to show some new work and meet some great brides and grooms. The show is at the Two Rivers Convention Center on Main Street in Grand Junction. It is Sunday, January 27th from 12:00pm to 5:00pm. Come and see us there!

We photographed Jackie and Micah's engagement session on Thursday. They were here from California for Christmas break to spend the holidays with Jackie's parents in Glenwood Springs. Jackie is finishing up her last year as a music major at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. Micah had just returned to La Mirada from spending time in Washington D.C. working on his Political Science degree.

We hadn't actually even met either of them until they came to our house on Thursday. Jackie had found out about us through her Mom, Linda, who teaches at Nicholas' school and drives the van that he rides to and from school. So we sewed up the deal through email and over the phone, and we finally got to meet each other in person! What an adorable couple. Seriously. They have the greatest chemistry together. It was an absolute joy to spend time photographing them. And we had the perfect December weather for the shoot - a beautiful snowfall. Jackie and Micah were troopers - they did most of the shoot without coats on. They just huddled close to stay warm, and we got some great stuff! We gave them a little direction, and turned them loose. They were great together. It is so fun to see two people so in love. We are super excited about photographing their wedding next summer.

Happy Thanksgiving

I think Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays because it reminds us how truly blessed we are. We are so thankful for the things that God has given us - our health, our home, our families, our precious two sons, and each other. May you find abundant gratitude and joy on this day!

Kai David Sjoerdsma

Kai David Sjoerdsma came into the world Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 9:47pm. I was so honored about 8 months ago when Val came to me and asked me to photograph her birth. It is an honor to photograph a birth, but to be present at a good friend's birth is truly something special.

Val came to the hospital at 7:30am on Thursday to be induced. Her due date wasn't until November 21st, but her doctor was leaving town and it was really important to Val and Craig that she deliver their baby. The process began very slowly, and on-and-off Texas Holdem got everyone through the day. Val was such a trooper. She opted to have a light epidural after enduring some pretty tough times. She was much more comfortable and still progressed quite well.

Finally, it was time to push. She worked so hard and made great progress. But when the baby moved far enough down the birth canal, his heart rate plummeted and things got very scary very quickly. Val's doctor called for immediate action to get the baby out. We were all very scared, to say the least, because none of us really understood what was happening. In less than a minute, little Kai was out, and the problems were apparent - he was face-up and the cord was wrapped around his neck twice. There were a few moments of silence - to Val and Craig an eternity of silence - before his little body finally responded to the new world in which he had entered. Relief poured over all of us. There were a few minutes of uncertainty that followed as the pediatric doctor checked him over to see if he was alright. He was more than alright - he was perfect. After a rough start to his precious little life, he rebounded amazingly. He spent the night in the nursery, but joined his Mommy and Daddy the next morning. He is doing great - nursing, sleeping, squeaking. Welcome home, Kai David Sjoerdsma! See the slideshow
